Crawl Stats gaps are not Page Indexing no-backfill
On 20 September 2026 Search Engine Roundtable reported that the Google Search Console Crawl Stats report was missing a day of data for 15 September 2026 (some property time zones may show 16 September). The hole appeared across Search Console profiles, which points at Console reporting rather than a property-specific crawl stop. Separately, on 11 September 2026 John Mueller stated that Google does not back-fill Page Indexing data for the June delay hole (industry reporting; prior Casinokrisa note: Search Console does not backfill Page Indexing gaps).

Interpretation
In indexing-first terms, Console is a family of sensors, not one clock.
A Crawl Stats blank day is usually a reporting gap on the crawl ledger. Search Engine Roundtable’s 20 September note frames the 15 September hole as universal and historically restored. Until Google fills or permanently leaves that day empty, the operational default is: do not equate “no point on the chart” with “no crawls that day.” Corroborate with Host status, response breakdowns, and your own access logs.
A Page Indexing blank day can be permanent missing telemetry. Mueller’s reported 11 September wording is specific to indexing data and no backfill. That statement does not automatically transfer to Crawl Stats. Applying “wait, it always comes back” to Page Indexing June days, or “it’s gone forever” to Crawl Stats 15 Sep, mixes two recovery classes.
