Search Console does not backfill Page Indexing gaps
On 11 September 2026 Search Engine Land and Search Engine Roundtable reported multi-day blanks in the Google Search Console Page Indexing chart for June 2026. John Mueller attributed the hole to the June period when the report was not updated, and stated that Google does not back-fill indexing data. Days earlier, on 8–9 September 2026, the same report briefly labeled many still-indexed URLs as "Crawled - currently not indexed"; Mueller called that a short blip that was resolved overnight. Those are two different failure modes of the same chart.

Interpretation
In indexing-first terms, Page Indexing is lossy telemetry, not a complete daily ledger of the index.
A blank day is missing data. Mueller's reported wording ties the September-visible June hole to the earlier delay when the report was not updated, and states that indexing data is not back-filled. The chart therefore can permanently lack points for some days. Filling those days with linear interpolation, averaging neighbors, or treating the gap as a drop in indexed URL count invents a series Google did not publish.
A blip is a temporary wrong label. The 8–9 September wave put "Crawled - currently not indexed" on URLs that remained indexed. That is a reporting defect on status rows, not proof of mass removal. Mueller's reported framing: nothing breaks if indexing works and only the report differs; double-check a homepage (or other stable URL) with Inspection / live results before treating the wave as an index event.
Neither equals a quieter or mass-deindexed site. Both incidents were described in industry reporting as affecting many properties at once. Shared chart holes and shared false CCNI spikes are weak evidence for property-specific index loss. Property-specific investigation still starts at URL Inspection, sitemap freshness, crawl stats, and live SERP checks — not at redrawing a gapped chart.
Treat Console as an operational sensor with known loss modes: delay, permanent hole (no backfill), and transient mislabel. An audit trail of the index would require continuous, restorable, URL-level truth. Page Indexing does not promise that.
